Post-Master’s Certificate in Clinical and Translational Science

About the Program

The program consists of 14 credit hours of didactic courses, 2 credit hours of clinical and translational science seminars, and 4 credit hours of mentored research. The mentored research project that is a requirement of the CCTS program will culminate in a scientific paper that is suitable for submission to a scientific research journal. The CCTS can be completed in 1 year and courses taken while obtaining the certificate can be applied toward the Masters of Clinical and Translational Science for those who wish to continue.

Career Information

A specially-designed knowledge and skills building curriculum has been created to provide advanced training in Clinical and Translational Science (CTS) at GRU. The primary objective of this program is to enable health professionals to perform Clinical and Translational research.

Graduates completing the program should be able to perform each of the following tasks:

  • Effectively utilize human subjects in clinical trials
  • Carry out basic analyses of clinical research data
  • Apply basic epidemiologic principles and tools in clinical research
  • Consider relevant ethical and legal issues when designing and conducting clinical research
  • Prepare research manuscripts for publication in research journals
  • Prepare competitive grant proposals for extra-mural research funding.

Financial Support

It is anticipated that the tuition for the CCTS program for eligible full-time employees at GRU would be completely covered under the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), once the trainee has been employed at GRU for 6 months. The only exception would be a trainee who has to take more than 8 hours in a semester in order to make up courses that they failed to take at the scheduled time in the curriculum. Trainees who follow the recommended CCTS Course Sequence will never have to take more than 8 credit hours in a given semester.

Admissions Requirements

Completed Online Application for Graduate Programs which includes:

  1. completion of a Supplemental Form requiring a Personal Statement detailing interest in and motivation for entering the Clinical, and
  2. identification of three individuals as referees which must include confirmed research mentor(s), current immediate supervisor, and a co-mentor or colleague

Note: All required application materials and documents must be received in order for an application to be considered complete and before an admission decision can be made. Applications and supporting materials received after the program deadline will only be considered on a space-available basis.

Minimum Degree Requirement: A doctoral degree from an accredited school in the health/clinical sciences (e.g., M.D., D.O., PharmD., D.D.S., Ph.D.); OR (2) a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree in the health/clinical sciences from an accredited institution of higher education (e.g., B.S.N., M.H.S.) **and** a professional designation (e.g., R.N., P.T., O.T.). To be used to satisfy degree requirement, evaluation of foreign educational transcripts must show degree(s) earned that are the U.S. equivalency of degree(s) required by the program.

Official Transcripts: Official transcripts are required from all universities and colleges ever attended. Only in the case of transcripts from international colleges/universities will an official course-by-course transcript evaluation be accepted in lieu of an official transcript.

Official transcripts should be sent to GRU’s Office of Academic Admissions. To remain official, all transcripts must remain in the original, unopened, sealed and stamped/signed envelope from the Registrar’s office of the issuing institution. Alternatively, GRU will accept official electronic transcripts from the registrar’s office at your prior institution. Electronic transcripts should be directed to

Applicants for the Clinical and Translational Science program are required to provide transcripts and proof of degree(s) from all universities and colleges ever attended. The Dean for the College of Graduate Studies reserves the right to request additional academic records prior to admission consideration.

Transcript/Credential Evaluation of Foreign Transcripts: An official, professional course-by-course evaluation based on official transcripts and documents is required for all foreign educational transcripts and documents from one of the following three credentials evaluation services: Josef Silny & Associates, Inc., World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE). Silny and WES are recommended. Official evaluations based on unofficial transcripts, documents, or copies will not satisfy this requirement.

References: Recommendations (which include a reference form and letter of recommendation) from three individuals are required. Referees should be individuals qualified to critically assess the applicant’s prior academic (usually college professors), employment, artistic, research and/or clinical experience (clinical or research supervisor/mentor) and qualifications (as applicable) as well as the applicant’s potential as a graduate student in the field/program selected.

Graduate reference forms and letters of recommendation can be submitted online only. As part of the online application process, applicants provide the names and current email addresses for three individuals they have asked to serve as their referees. Once the online application is submitted, each referee will receive an email notification directing him/her to the online site where he/she can complete the reference form and submit his/her letter of recommendation. To change a referee after the application has been submitted, the applicant is instructed to log into his/her CollegeNet account and update the name and current email address for the referee. Status updates of your referees’ submissions will be provided to you directly from CollegeNet.

References are required from each of the following:

  1. Research Mentor ‐ Identification of a research mentor is required prior to applying to the program.
  2. Immediate Supervisor‐the letter must indicate that the supervisor will provide adequate release time for course work and research to enroll in the MS or Certificate program (two morning per week for course work and 1 research day for a total of 2 full days of release time)
  3. Co‐mentor or colleague

GRE Requirement: Test takers who took the GRE prior to August 1, 2011 were scored on the old scoring scale of 200-800. Test takers who took the GRE after to August 1, 2011 are scored on the new scoring scale of 130-170. For additional information on the GRE tests in general, please refer directly to the ETS website at

All official GRE scores must be submitted to GRU’s Office of Academic Admissions directly from the Education Testing Service (ETS) and must be less than five years old. The institution code for submission of GRE scores to GHSU is 5406. Please do not select a department code. 

The GRE requirement may be waived for an applicant holding an earned doctorate (or equivalent).

TOEFL Requirement: Minimum score of 550 paper‐based, 213 computer-based, or 79 internet-based.

Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores are required for applicants whose first language is not English. The institution code for submission of TOEFL scores to GHSU is 5406.  Please do not select a department code.

Exemption from the TOEFL requirement is allowed for graduate students who submit proof of earning a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college/university where English is the language of instruction.
