Career Information


This program educates advanced nurse clinicians for expert practice in leadership and clinical roles. This doctoral-level education provides the clinical and management expertise to improve health care outcomes. The program enables nurses to become expert nurse leaders and collaborators in solving health care problems in systems.

This program prepares graduates to:

Systematically assess and appraise a focused area of nursing practice to advance the science of nursing.

  • Model exemplary professional values and ethical decision-making. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of evidence-based practice and scholarship in nursing practice. Investigate the social, economic, political and policy context of health care and related systems which affect patient care outcomes.
  • Assume, enhance and create leadership roles in clinical practice, advocacy/policy and education.
  • Evaluate, synthesize and apply theory, models and research to impact health care of diverse populations.
  • Clinically analyze and evaluate multi-faceted clinical practice and health care systems.

Career Opportunities


Doctors of nursing practice have leadership opportunities in clinical practice arenas, including higher education settings.

About the Program


  • Attend full time or part time (and work while you attend school)
  • Approved by Georgia Board of Regents as a web based program with greater than 50 percent of the program taught online
  • Currently, students are completing the program in cohort groups located at
    multiple distance-learning sites on the campuses in Athens, Augusta, Albany State University, Columbus State University, Clayton State University, Valdosta State University, Memorial Health University Medical Center, Inc. in Savannah, GA, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, and Ana G. Mendez University System, Puerto Rico to optimize convenience. The program may be expanded to other areas as well.
  • Capstone/practice project completed in your area of expertise.

Admission Requirements


  • Master’s degree in nursing or related field
  • Official transcripts from all post-secondary academic study
  • Graduate-level biostatistics course from an accredited institution within the last five years, with a grade of B or higher
  • Graduate-level epidemiology course from an accredited institution within the last five years, with a grade of B or higher
  • Official GRE score of 900 or higher (sum of verbal and quantitative scores) or minimum MAT score of 400; may be waived with cumulative minimum GPA of 3.25 (master’s degree)
  • Current professional nurse licensure
  • Certification in specialty area as appropriate
  • Two-page paper detailing concept of the role of a doctor of nursing practice
  • Personal interview
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Three professional or academic letters of recommendation
  • Experience in a specialty area indicating mastery in nursing practice
  • Official TOEFL score of 600 paper-based, 250 computer-based or 100 Internet-based, if applicable
  • An official comprehensive course-by course report of all foreign educational documents from each foreign college and university attended is required (including calculation of grade point average (GPA) equivalent on a 4.0 scale). Official verification of transcripts/course-by-course report must be submitted from one of the following three approved Foreign Credentials Evaluation Services, at your cost: Josef Silny & Associates, Inc., World Education Services (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc.
