PSRY 5033 - Elective in Residential Treatment

Goals: To educate and expose students to the general medical principles and management of critically ill surgical patients in the Intensive Care Unit environment. Objectives: To provide the student doctor with the opportunity to become a member of a treatment team that includes a forensic and child psychiatrist, understand psychopathology of adolescents with self-destructive and aggressive behaviors, learn about specific evaluation and treatment of sexually reactive and aggressive behaviors, learn and practice the evaluation of trauma and aggression with specific skills taught in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), learn about the psychopharmacology of these disorders, learn about the role of the physician in multidisciplinary teams, and learn about substance abuse/dependence evaluation and treatment in this population. At the end of the rotation, students will be able to perform a basic evaluation of adolescents with aggression problems, trauma, sexually aggressive behavior, and substance abuse/dependence issues; perform the cognitive restructuring part of CBT; perform a basic substance dependence evaluation; use the following assessment tools: Children’s Depressive Inventory, Trauma Symptom Scales for Children and Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test; understand the Abel screen and the JSOAP for sexually aggressive patients; and understand the psychopathology of PTSD and how to assess patients for it. Students will participate in treatment teams performing psychotherapy, evaluations, psychiatric supervision and teaching, and doing a brief presentation. Clinical performance evaluations by faculty assess the following skills: patient care - psychiatric interviewing, mental status examination, performance on administering assessment tools, and understanding the psychopharmacology of this population; medical knowledge - practice-based learning and improvement, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills and system-based learning.
